General Information

General Information about Berlin for Meeting Planners and Event Professionals

Located in the northeastern side of the country, Berlin is the capital of Germany and one of the major economic, commercial, cultural, scientific, and political centers of Europe. Its economy revolves around the service sector and high-technology companies, and its main industries include information technology, electronics, constructions, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. Its turbulent 20th century history remains visible in various famous landmarks such as the Holocaust memorial, the Brandenburg Gate, and the remains of the Berlin Wall. Berlin is the only city in the world with three active opera houses (the Berliner Staatsoper, the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Komische Oper Berlin) and one of the few cities with three UNESCO World Heritage Sites (the Museum Island, the Modernism Housing Estates, and the Palaces and Parks of Potsdam). It is home to the tallest building in Germany, the 368 metres high Berlin TV Tower, but also contains a large number of green areas, including parks, woods and rivers (about 44% of its entire surface, making it Germany’s greenest city). Berlin is world-famous for its large community of graffiti artists too: every year, the city spends over €35 million to clean the numerous graffiti off its walls, which nevertheless always seem to reappear quite quickly.

Berlin as a Conference Destination

Berlin is a major center for international conferences, conventions, fairs, festivals, and tradeshows on themes related to customer dialogue, digital marketing, technology, economics, fashion and e-commerce. Some of the most important events include: the International Conference and Trade Show for Innovative Customer Dialogue, focused on the relationship between customer dialogue, innovation and digitalization; the IFA Global Markets Expert Talks, where new developments in global buying strategies and trends are addressed; the Tech Open Air Festival, the most important technology festival from Europe; the Fashiontech conference, focused on recent developments from the intersection of fashion and technology; and the K5 Future Retail Conference, one of the most important events related to e-commerce.

Probably the most famous and iconic landmarks are the remains of the Berlin Wall (which until 1989 used to separate East and West Germany). Other important landmarks from Berlin include: the Brandenburg Gate, another historical symbol of the divided Germany; the Alexanderplatz, a historical market and meeting place, currently home to the enormous Berlin TV Tower; or the Berliner Dom, a beautiful Protestant church.
