What sets top organizations apart from the rest?
Any successful organization needs strong leaders and talented team members. But how do good organizations become world-class organizations?
They build a culture of excellence! This means setting high standards based on peer input, cultivating a supportive community, promoting teamwork, and enabling professional growth.
Involving team members in creating performance standards engages and motivates the entire team. And when team members collaborate and have opportunities to develop, they contribute more effectively to the organization’s success.
This sets the stage for an organization where every team member feels valued and inspired. And this kind of team environment enables exceptional results and sustainable growth.

One reason is that, as a professional keynote speaker, trainer, consultant, and author, I, as you know, spend a lot of time on airplanes. This is great because you get up on stage, they give you the microphone, you do a great job, they love you, you get the applause, you get the check, you get on the business-class flight, and then you’re out.
But it’s a lonely profession, and everyone who’s excellent at it experiences a certain degree of disconnection from their home society.
It’s sometimes even more pronounced.
And so, 20 years ago, here in Singapore, I was one of the co-founders of a group called Asia Professional Speakers.
Now, we have 350 members.
And this thing has become a real phenomenon.
It was created for three reasons:
To find our colleagues. Who else does this? I mean, I know a few of them, but there must be more.
To form a sense of community, and community has that sense of togetherness, concern, and commitment to one another.
To, as a group, define ourselves by improving our competence. I learn from you, you learn from me. Here come the newbies, which is always happening.
The theme and spirit of this association, as well as other speaker associations around the world, is educational support and encouragement for and with one another.
OK, so, seven years ago, the association surprised me by giving me a lifetime achievement award.
It was funny because I thought, “What do you mean? Is it over?”
It was rude and awkward. I was thinking, “Where is this coming from?”
They’ve since redefined it as the Hall of Fame, and every year, someone gets added to it.
But that was the first time I realized, “Wow, this was actually historically impactful.”
It wasn’t so much that they were honoring me, but that there was an association saying, “This is the way somebody in our field could perform and contribute in a way that we, as a community, want to recognize — like that, so that other people have a North Star.”
